SURVIVAL FIELD GUIDE
A practical navigation system that combines digital mapping, terrain awareness, a compass, and backup plans for western backcountry travel.
Study the country before the trip. Identify trailheads, roads, ridges, drainages, water, private boundaries, and obvious handrails you can use if visibility gets bad.
A phone mapping app is useful, but batteries fail and screens break. Carry a backup method such as a paper map, compass, or secondary GPS when the consequences of getting lost are high.
Navigation is easier when you keep track of where you are instead of trying to recover your location after you are already confused. Notice terrain changes, major turns, creek crossings, and elevation.
Stop moving long enough to think. Confirm your last known point, compare terrain to the map, and avoid turning a small uncertainty into miles of wrong-direction travel.
