SURVIVAL FIELD GUIDE

Backcountry Water Planning

Plan water before the trip so a dry source or hot climb does not become an emergency.

Water planning starts before you leave the trailhead. Map dependable sources, questionable seasonal sources and backup options. Carry enough capacity to bridge the longest dry stretch.

Do Not Depend on One Source

Small springs and creeks can disappear late in the year. Identify multiple sources when possible.

Treat Backcountry Water

Use an appropriate filter, purifier or chemical treatment and follow its instructions. Clear-looking mountain water can still contain organisms that can make you sick.

Protect Your Backup

A lightweight treatment backup is worth carrying if your primary filter clogs, freezes or breaks.
