CAMPING FIELD GUIDE

Build a Cold-Weather Sleep System

How to combine sleeping pad insulation, bag or quilt rating, dry clothing, and campsite selection for colder mountain nights.

Think in Layers

A cold-weather sleep system is more than a sleeping bag. Pad insulation, shelter, base layers, moisture control, and the bag all work together.

Do Not Ignore the Ground

The ground can pull heat away quickly. Use a sleeping pad with enough insulation for the temperatures you expect, and add a second pad when conditions call for it.

Keep Insulation Dry

Change out of wet hunting layers before bed when possible. Protect down insulation from rain and condensation and air it out when the sun gives you a chance.

Plan for Colder Than Forecast

Mountain temperatures can drop well below the forecast. Build a margin into your system and keep dry socks, a warm hat, and an emergency layer available.
