HUNTING FIELD GUIDE
How to use terrain, light, shade, and patience to find western mule deer before committing to a long hike.
Do not sweep a hillside randomly. Break the country into sections and search each one carefully before moving to the next.
Mule deer are often easiest to find when they are moving between feeding and bedding areas. Be set up before legal light and stay behind the glass late in the day.
Most deer are partly hidden. Search for an ear, antler tip, leg line, horizontal back, or a patch of color that does not match the surrounding terrain.
A tripod makes binoculars dramatically more effective for long glassing sessions. Stability lets your eyes notice small movement that handheld glass often misses.
